Birmingham Top Ten: Cars

This week’s Birmingham Mail top ten selection looks at the many legendary cars that have rolled off the production lines of West Midland factories

No list of top ten cars would be complete without the Mini – the Birmingham-built car that changed the face of motoring.

Launched in 1959 when petrol was scarce because of the Suez crisis it became a British icon of the 60s and made car designers worldwide throw away the rule book. Designed for BMC by Sir Alec Issigonis the Mini was radical because it was a front-wheel-drive car which broke with tradition by mounting the engine transversely to create more interior space. The Austin Mini was manufactured at Longbridge while the Morris Mini was made at Cowley. Link
